Float like a butterfly (or how to tell a girl has three big brothers)

Today as we watched my second eldest boy at his swimming lesson, my wee girl was flitting around the chairs occupied by spectator mummies.

“Oh look! She’s dancing!” cooed one mother, watching my toddler move her arms in the air. Her motions were repetitive, a bit choppy, but after all she is only 20 months.

“Are you dancing you cutie?” asked another mother. My daughter beamed back at the woman and added a little two-step to her arm gestures, her skirt swaying, enjoying the attention of these new admirers.

“Nah,” grinned G-man, my oldest boy whose swimming lesson was over, to the crowd of women on the pool deck. “She’s not dancing you know. I’ve been teaching her this.”

He proceeded to happily demonstrate making fart noises with his armpit, as his delighted baby sister laughed and did her best to join in.

Both my children were thrilled with the audience reaction.
