Being the younger sister of three big brothers means my baby girl, as our little friend visiting us the other day noted, doesn't have much princess or girlie stuff. We have an abundance of action heros, loads of Lego, and plenty of building blocks. We have shelves of books, several puzzles, and a great selection of arts and crafts supplies. But only two little cloth baby dolls the size of my hand and one hand-me-down princess dress amid a plethora of pirate and knight gear.
I don't think my little one has noticed this lack of girlie stuff. At 23 months she happily dons her nightie before bed and then insists on wearing a Spiderman t-shirt over it so she's part of the pack of hero-clad boys that are her brothers.
I have to admit that when visiting Kate was so incredibly shocked at my girl's lack of dollies it made me think. And it motivated me to get busy. Now, I've looked at dolls and things since the arrival of our little Rose, but the lovely cloth dolls I prefer to the plastic and gimmicky ones are so expensive. I've been researching doll making online, where resources abound. And then I found a muslin doll form at Michael's, which when I used my 40 percent off coupon, was just over $5. I've stitched on her blue eyes and red mouth to match my baby girl's face and found a lovely light brown soya yarn with just a hint of auburn, like my baby's hair. I'm happy so far but now have to get busy making a little wardrobe and a child-size sling to get this present ready for my daughter's second birthday next month. It's been so much fun I'm thinking of doing dolls as gifts when my sons are invited to birthday parties for friends that are girls.
